Every piece tells a story

Working with vintage photographs and found fragments, Robin creates mixed media collages that blur the boundary between reality and imagination. Guided by intuition and inspired by folk and outsider art, her layered compositions reveal unexpected narratives within overlooked materials. Each piece becomes an intuitive hodgepodge — layering memory, texture, and imagery, where the past and imagination meet.

Artist Statement

Growing up in Michigan in a family of artists, Robin developed an early fascination with storytelling and the emotional resonance of visual imagery. Her work explores how narratives preserve fleeting moments, reveal hidden connections, and imagine worlds that feel both nostalgic and futuristic. Years spent collecting Mexican, Native American, folk, and outsider art deepened her appreciation for the individuality and imperfections of handmade objects.

Drawn to the raw, expressive energy of found materials, Robin approaches collage as an intuitive interplay of image, texture, and association. Using vintage photographs, magazines, and overlooked ephemera, she creates layered mixed media works rich with texture, subtle narrative, and visual tension. Through unexpected juxtapositions, forgotten imagery is given renewed presence, forming compositions that feel both intimate and universal.

Most of her pieces remain untitled, inviting viewers to form their own interpretations and emotional connections. Each collage becomes a shared space where her vision meets the viewer's imagination, transforming ordinary remnants into evocative compositions open to interpretation.

Process

Robin's process begins with an intentional search for materials gathered from flea markets, antique shops, and forgotten archives. She is drawn to textures, colors, and imagery that spark curiosity or nostalgia, allowing instinct to guide the composition. The act of assembly is both playful and meditative: a single photograph may anchor a piece, while a ticket stub, fragment of sheet music, or line of poetry can shift its direction entirely.

Working with mixed media on paper, she builds depth through layering, contrast, and balance. The process often involves removing as much as adding, allowing surprising relationships to emerge organically. Each piece develops intuitively, revealing a compelling story while blurring the line between the familiar and the imagined.

Through collage, Robin transforms found fragments into layered visual narratives that invite reflection, curiosity, and interpretation. Her work invites viewers to slow down, look closely, and discover meaning in what might otherwise go unseen.
